Stone and Light: Paul Caponigro, Nature’s Whisper: Eric Lindbloom

Photography dealer Kathy McCarver Root and her gallery, KMR Arts, proudly announce the opening of its latest show of fine art photography, “Stone and Light: Paul Caponigro, Nature’s Whisper: Eric Lindbloom”. The exhibition will open June 28 with a reception with both of the artists from 5-7pm and will continue through August 16, 2014.

On June 28, KMR Arts will open a magnificent exhibition by two renowned photographers: Paul Caponigro and Eric Lindbloom. The exhibition focuses on two complementary bodies of work by these internationally known photographers.

A follow up to the enormously successful exhibition at KMR Arts in 2013 of Paul Caponigro’s photographs, “Stone and Light” highlights Paul Caponigro’s photographs of the ancient stone circles, dolmens, and early churches in the British and Celtic landscape. Caponigro traveled to Ireland in 1966 upon receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship (the first of two Guggenheim Fellowships awarded to this distinguished artist.) Originally, Caponigro intended to travel to Egypt but photographer Dorothea Lange persuaded him to explore the megalithic structures of Ireland and Great Britain. As Caponigro recalled, “Ireland became my Egypt and the stones became my temples.” He visited Ireland and Britain fifteen times between 1966 and 1977, and has continued to make periodic visits. On June 26, 2014, the Yale Center for British Art will open an important exhibition of Paul Caponigro’s photographs on the same body of work.

Whether the subject is landscape or still life, Caponigro's engagement with the natural world is both palpable and poetic. After attending Boston University to study piano, he again became attracted to photography and between the years of 1955 and 1957, he studied with Minor White and was deeply influenced by the West Coast movement inspired by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Paul Caponigro's work is in the Museum of Modern Art, NYC, the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, AZ, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, NYC, International Center of Photography, NYC, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, the Chicago Art Institute, Chicago, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, among others and he has influenced numerous photographers through his extensive teaching. Caponigro has also been awarded three National Endowment for the Arts grants. Caponigro lived in Redding, Connecticut from 1967 to 1970. In an interview in 2006, Caponigro stated, “For me, photography provides an intersection of time, space, light, and emotional stance. One needs to be still enough, observant enough, and aware enough to recognize the life of the materials, to be able to 'hear through the eyes.”

Eric Lindbloom’s photographs of landscapes evoke the whispers of nature. His finely detailed images of landscapes transform poetry into imagery. Over the last ten years, Lindbloom has concentrated on three series of photographs made on the Cape in Massachusetts: Salt Marsh, Pitch Pines, and The Waves. Eric Lindbloom writes, “I found that I was pursuing the saga of the marriage of salt sea and grass — the sinuous rhythms of the matted grass bearing witness to its endless accommodation to the sea.” Lindbloom has had over thirty solo exhibitions of his photographs. Eric Lindbloom is a founding member of the Center for Photography in Woodstock, New York and his photographs are in the collections of The New York Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Alinari Museum in Florence, and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, among others.
